~Day 6~
On Tuesday we went on a canal tour of Copenhagen! It was a beautiful day to be outside, even though it did get windy out on the water. Here we are in Nyhavn Canal at the beginning of the tour waiting for our departure! This area, we learned, was one of main canals used for trade and travel to and from Copenhagen. As such it used to be a very dirty area of town filled with all the characteristics that go along with the negative sailor image. Today this is a very trendy area filled with cafes and restaurants and more filling those bright colored buildings behind us!
Another view of the canal on our way out for the tour!
An old decommissioned submarine!
And the famous Copenhagen Mermaid!
Amalienborg Palace is made up of four buildings and an open courtyard encircled by the buildings. You can see it here with the fountain in front and the large dome building in the background (the Marble Church, previously posted). The large building on the right side of the photo that is covered in white wrap and scaffolding is part of the palace, currently undergoing restoration.
Later that day we tried to tour the Carlsberg brewery. Unfortunately, we weren't able to go on the tour then because we'd arrived after the last tour for the day had begun.
~Day 7~
Joseph and I think that one of the absolute must-sees when visiting Copenhagen is the changing of the guard at the Queen's residence. It is fantastic! Again, because we do not have anything like this in our own country, it's all the more fascinating and impressive. Here we are in the courtyard of the Queen's residence ready for the changing of the guard!
It was a little different watching the changing of the guard today. They marched into the courtyard from this direction which was different from other times we've been there. There was construction underway at the usual entrance.
Here, a group of guards marching to change guard in each location in the courtyard.
After the changing of the guard we shopped our way down Strøget, one of the most major pedestrianized shopping streets. We got all of the last minute souvenirs and gifts that we needed to get!
Along the way we passed by the Guinness Book of Records museum and, naturally, had to take a photo!
We all found cute summer hats while we were out shopping today!! That's always fun!
It was a very nice day. Pretty low key and easy going! A nice finish to the whirlwind visit, we hope! Later that afternoon Joseph and I had our language class, so our guests were able to rest, relax and prepare for their journey back home.
It was truly a blessing to have some family come visit us. It was so nice to see some familiar faces, and it was exciting to have a taste of home. Thanks so much, Mom, Bill, and Wendi!! It meant a lot to us that you came all this way! We hope you guys had fun and know that we're thankful for each of you!
